Know Your Tires, Know Your TPMS Sensor
With the Tire Pressuring Monitoring System, or TPMS, your tires can check themselves. TPMS monitors the air pressure in your tires automatically and will let you know when things are “off,” whether the tire is completely flat or just a bit low on air. In other words, you never have to get your hands dirty! Then you can get your tires back to the proper pressure, keeping your car safe and fuel efficient, while reducing braking distance and tire wear. Keep in mind that the TPMS sensor won’t alert you if a tire is overinflated, only underinflated.
Types of TPMS
According to Congress’ TREAD act, the majority of cars made in 2006-2007 and later have to have TPMS. If your car is equipped, you’ll see a “low tire pressure” warning when you turn your key to “on.” You can also check your owner’s manual.
There are two types of TPMS that your car might have.
Direct
Direct TPMS uses a sensor located in the tire assembly that transmits data to your vehicle's computer system. It measures the tire's pressure and notifies the driver when pressure drops 25 percent or more below the manufacturer's recommended level.
Direct TPMS equipped tires are slightly more expensive, because proper care requires extra parts and labor. Costs vary, but on average come out to about $5 to $10 per tire, a small price to pay for peace of mind.
Indirect
Indirect TPMS uses the Anti Lock Braking System (ABS) to gauge tire pressure by measuring the difference in diameter of each tire.
